About this place
This is nearly 24,000 acres of old lava, lying almost flat. Walk out on it and you'll find where the flow buckled as it cooled and pushed up into long ridges. In other places it set smooth and ropey, folded over on itself. That kind is called pahoehoe. Once you've seen it you'll recognize it anywhere.
Look down. The rock is covered in lichen, in more colors than you would expect, and most people never notice because they're busy scanning the horizon.
Deer out here, coyotes, sage grouse. There isn't much else. Some people drive a long way for exactly that.
